This interview with noted Jungian scholar, Sonu Shamdasani, dives into what The Black Books actually represent, what they could teach us about Carl Jung which we weren’t aware of before, and how Sonu views Jung’s work more as a visionary tradition not unlike the work of Swedenborg, Dante and William Blake. The Black Books are a testimony to how Jung became Jung, and how by going his own way he developed his own mythology or – as Sonu calls it – Jung’s personal cosmology. Sonu also explains what he regards as key elements in this personal cosmology. All of this and more in what is a truly fascinating interview! 

The Black Books offer a unique portal into Jung’s mind and the origins of analytical psychology. More than 10 years after the landmark publication of The Red Book, the most important unpublished work by C.G. Jung – The Black Books – is published.

In 1913, C.G. Jung started a self-experiment that he called his “confrontation with the unconscious”: an engagement with his fantasies which he charted in a series of notebooks referred to as The Black Books. The Black Books shed light on the elaboration of Jung’s personal cosmology, as well as his attempts to embody insights from his self-investigation into his life and relationships.

The Red Book drew on material recorded therein up to 1916 but Jung continued to write in them for decades. Magnificently presented, featuring a revelatory essay by Sonu Shamdasani, and both translated and facsimile versions of each notebook, The Black Books offers a unique portal into Jung’s mind and the origins of analytical psychology.

Sonu Shamdasani

Sonu Shamdasani is a London-based author, editor, and professor at the UCL Centre for the History of Medicine, University College London. His works are on the history of psychiatry and psychology from the mid-nineteenth century to current times.
