Although not formally part of our team, Jung Platform would not exist if it were not for this man. Carl Gustav Jung (1875 – 1961) was one of the pioneer explorers of the psyche. What differentiated him from others is that he recognized that we as human beings are also spiritual creatures.
He incorporated Freud’s appreciation of the biological drives that move humankind, and Alfred Adler’s emphasis on family dynamics in the formation of personality. Yet, he moved beyond both to identify and track the central fact that as meaning-seeking, meaning-creating animals, we also have a spiritual life. A spiritual life that suffers when we are disconnected from that which nourishes the soul.
Carl Jung is arguably our time’s most important observer of humanity. Almost six decades after his death, his work is still relevant and resonant. Today, he could be regarded as a western medicine man who had a worldview similar to most indigenous healing traditions. Many of the ancient wisdom traditions offer deeply significant insights for practical living in the western world, and have many correlations with Jungian psychology. Collective unconscious and the world of dreams, for example, would be synonymous for the indigenous view of the Other World.
Jung was the founder of analytical psychology and his work was highly influential in fields like psychiatry, anthropology, archeology, literature, philosophy and religious studies. One of the central concepts of Jung’s psychology is individuation – the lifelong psychological process of differentiation of the self out of each individual’s conscious and unconscious aspects. Jung considered individuation to be the main task of human development.
He also created some of the most well known psychological concepts still used today. These include, among many others, complex, typology, archetype, persona, animus/anima, shadow, synchronicity, the collective unconscious, extraversion and intraversion, He also pioneered a number of tools for working with the psyche, including active imagination and dreamwork.
Jung was also an artist, craftsman and builder as well as a prolific writer. Many of his works were not published until after his death and some are still waiting publication.
