In this two class course, James Hollis explores one of the most enduring themes in psychology and mythology: rebirth. Yet rebirth never comes without a death first. Something in us must end before something new can begin.

Drawing from Carl Jung’s essay Concerning Rebirth, Hollis reflects on the many ways this pattern appears in human life. We encounter it in psychological crises, in moments when our old identity no longer works, and in those periods when life asks us to let go of what once gave us stability. The ego naturally resists such passages, yet again and again growth requires the surrender of an earlier version of ourselves.

Hollis also explores the archetypal forms of rebirth that Jung described across cultures: reincarnation, resurrection, transformation, ritual renewal, and the recovery of lost parts of the soul. These images are not merely religious ideas. They express something fundamental about the psyche’s own process of renewal.

Along the way, Hollis reflects on complexes, imagination, cultural history, and the mysterious ways psychological energy moves through generations and societies. What appears as depression, disorientation, or loss of meaning may actually signal that an old worldview has exhausted itself and that a deeper life is seeking expression.

Jung’s essay Concerning Rebirth provides the foundation for this lecture. It is not required reading, but it can deepen your experience of the material.
This course offers a thoughtful and humbling exploration of how the psyche grows through cycles of ending and renewal.
