Most of us live disconnected from the land we occupy. Guided by nature-based soul guide Matt Syrdal, this course leads you into a felt encounter with the spirit of your own place.  You will use myth, story, and experiential practice to listen to the land. This course helps you cultivate deep belonging, reciprocal relationship, and a rooted connection to the world right where you live.

Talk Description

Write your awesome label here.

Most of us live somewhere without ever really arriving.

We commute across it, build on it, and pass through it. But we don't know the land, and it doesn't know us. Perhaps this is one of the unconscious griefs of modern life. We are severed from place. The separation is so complete that we do not even notice how deep the wound really is. We can name our human ancestors two generations back, yet we have no idea who we share our soil with today. We don't know what tree grows outside our window. We don't know what happened on the ground we stand on. We don't know what it might be like to be known by the land rather than simply occupying it.

What if every place carries a spirit and a history? Think of the hillside, the river bend, a city park, or the vacant lot. Across cultures and centuries, human beings have understood that place has interiority, memory, and the capacity for relationship. We see this from the Sámi of the Arctic to the Celtic peoples of Ireland, and from the Andes to Aotearoa. Rooted in animist depth psychology, they experienced this firsthand. The land is not a backdrop. It is Presence. And that Presence wants to be experienced. In fact, it wants to meet you, the way any living thing wants to be known by its neighbors.

In this 90-minute workshop with Matt Syrdal, you will be guided into a deeper conversation. You will experience a real, felt encounter with the spirit of place where you live, wherever you are joining from. We will use story, myth, and an experiential journey designed to open a door rather than explain it shut.

Along the way, we will explore three ancient forms this land-based spiritual practice has always taken. First is reciprocity with nature, the ongoing exchange that keeps a relationship with land alive. Second is protection, honoring the boundaries and respect that keep humans and land from harming each other. Finally, we will learn portal practices, which are the specific, teachable ways communities have opened a channel to speak with what is there.

These serve as guided invitations you can carry into your own continuing practice, long after the 90 minutes end.

Come ready to be surprised by where you already live.

frequent asked questions

Do I need to live in a rural area or near nature to participate?

No. The spirit of place exists everywhere, including city apartments, urban parks, and suburban neighborhoods. This course provides land-based spiritual practices that work equally well whether you are surrounded by concrete or deep forest.

How does animist depth psychology differ from standard active imagination or dreamwork?

While dreamwork and active imagination primarily focus on inner psychological figures, animist depth psychology turns that same listening awareness outward toward the physical environment. You will learn to engage with the living presence and memory embedded in the actual land you inhabit.

What are "portal practices" and how are they taught in this workshop?

Portal practices are traditional, structured ways that communities have historically opened a two-way channel of communication with their local landscape. Matt Syrdal teaches these as gentle, grounded invitations that you can safely practice in your daily life.

Do I need prior experience with nature-based soul work or mythic study?

No prior experience is necessary. This 90-minute session is designed as an introductory entrance point. It offers practical tools, story, and guided experiential journeys that anyone can immediately apply to where they currently live.
