From South Africa to Jung Platform; A Life Guided by Dreams
Machiel Klerk is a social entrepreneur, licensed mental health therapist, international speaker, dreamworker, and published author. Born in South Africa, he moved to the Netherlands in his early youth, spent a year in France as a teenager, backpacked through Asia, and eventually settled in the United States in 2004, where he still lives and works today. That curious journey through cultures and healing traditions shaped everything he would go on to build.
Machiel has been a licensed mental health therapist since 2006 and holds a master's degree in counseling psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute, one of the world's most respected institutions for depth psychology. Alongside his clinical training, he has studied Jungian psychology extensively and spent years immersed in the healing and dream traditions of cultures across the world, with a particular focus on African traditions rooted in his country of birth.
It was a dream that founded Jung Platform.
Machiel had a vivid dream about a platform beside Carl Jung's house on Lake Zurich. He took it as an instruction to build it exactly as he had seen it. That dream became the organization that has since grown into the world's leading online education spaces for Jungian and depth psychology, with participants from over 60 countries. He also founded the Jung Society of Utah.
Dreamwork & Healing Traditions
What sets Machiel apart as a teacher is the breadth of the tradition he draws from. Most dreamwork teachers work within a single framework: Jungian, Freudian, or contemporary neuroscience. Machiel moves between traditions, drawing on decades of study in African healing and dream practices, shamanic traditions, and the depth psychological lineage of C.G. Jung. He has given lectures and workshops on dreams and psychology across the globe.
This cross-cultural, multi-traditional approach means his teaching consistently reveals dimensions of dreamwork that a purely Western or clinical framework tends to miss, including the communal, relational, and spiritual dimensions of dreaming that indigenous traditions have always understood.
Dreamwork certificate program
For those ready to go beyond reading about dreams and into a structured, practitioner-level training, Machiel created the Dreamwork Certificate Program at Jung Platform. This months-long, cohort-based program draws on six major dream traditions, including Jungian dreamwork, shamanic dreaming, active imagination, and African healing traditions, and teaches participants to work with dreams both in their own lives and in professional practice with clients.
