Why do families repeat behaviors that satisfy no one?

Through case examples, Craig Chalquist explores how family history shapes individuation. You will learn how awareness supports repair, renewal, and psychological adulthood.

Course Description

Why do families repeat behaviors? Why do the same patterns show up at work, at home, and in our closest relationships? Why do these dynamics persist for years, and sometimes for generations?

This five class course explores these questions through the combined lens of Jungian psychology and Family Systems theory. You will gain a deeper understanding of how unconscious patterns form, how they are maintained, and how they shape both inner life and outer relationships. The course uses the alchemical concept of Circulatio as a guiding image. We return again and again to recurring patterns, not to get stuck in them, but to meet them with greater awareness and choice.

Although the course is not primarily for clinicians, it includes case examples to ground the material in lived experience. Craig Chalquist examines the repetitive interactions that cause distress and confusion. He will look closely at unconscious family roles and the myths and archetypes that often organize them. This course gives a sense of how family history influences identity, belonging, and the process of individuation.

The course also addresses symptoms and stressors. Rather than viewing them only as problems to eliminate, we approach them as meaningful signals that point toward unfinished developmental tasks. From this depth psychological perspective, symptoms become doorways to deeper understanding.
Across the five classes, you will learn how intergenerational trauma is transmitted and how it can be transformed. You will consider what it means to move toward psychological adulthood. This includes developing a conscious relationship to your own values, limits, and inner authority.

By the end of the course, you will have a clearer map of your own patterns and greater capacity to respond rather than react. You will be better equipped to engage family and work relationships with awareness, responsibility, and compassion.
