Learn to enter hypnotic states intentionally, work with images and symbols, and build a grounded self-hypnosis practice informed by depth psychology

Hypnosis is a natural state you already enter at least a few times a day. What if you could use it intentionally? To rest more deeply, to become more present, and to dialogue with the unconscious?

This 6-session course introduces the theory and practice of hypnosis through a depth psychology lens. Each 90-minute class includes teaching, Q&A, and guided practice, so you leave every session with a technique you can use immediately. By the end of the course, you’ll have the tools to build a grounded, sustainable self-hypnosis practice that you can call on for everyday challenges as well as deeper inner work.

This program is co-sponsored by Clover Educational Consulting GroupThe program MUST be attended live in its entirety, to receive  APA 9.0 CEs for Psychologists.

Practical Self-Hypnosis: A Jungian Approach

Write your awesome label here.

In this course, you'll learn self-hypnosis techniques grounded in both neuroscience and Jungian psychology. You will be guided in discovering your unique hypnotic learning style and how to work with the imaginal realm where dreams, symbols, and archetypal figures live.

Each 90-minute module includes teaching, Q&A, and guided practice, so you leave every session with a technique you can use immediately. You'll learn to create your own trance states, work with inner imagery (safe places, wise guides, symbolic figures), and apply hypnosis to everyday challenges like sleep and stress, as well as deeper work with dreams, symbols, and life transitions.

The course covers the history and myths of hypnosis, various induction techniques, nervous system regulation, imagery work, symbol amplification, and how to build a sustainable self-hypnosis practice. Whether you're exploring this for personal growth or to deepen your professional work with clients, you'll develop practical skills for intentional, embodied relationship with the unconscious.

By the end, you'll have practical tools to work with your psyche intentionally, creating space for rest, insight, and deeper self-knowledge.

Ethical considerations, contraindications, and scope of practice boundaries are addressed throughout, particularly in relation to using hypnosis and imagery based techniques. Participants will learn to recognize when self hypnosis and imaginal practices are appropriate for personal use, when and how elements of this work may be adapted within their professional scope of practice, and when referral, consultation, or additional training is indicated. Designed for post-doctoral mental health professionals, this course builds on foundational psychological training by emphasizing clinical application, professional judgment, and ethical integration of hypnotic approaches.

To receive CE credits for this program, participants MUST attend all live classes.

What Participants Will Explore

  • The history and myths of hypnosis
  • The theory and practice of hypnosis from a Jungian framework (as situated in relationship to contemporary neuroscientific and clinical understandings of hypnosis)
  • Your own hypnotic learning style and how you most naturally enter trance
  • A self-hypnosis induction technique for nervous system regulation and everyday stress relief
  • "Refuge" imagery to support rest, recentering, and burnout recovery
  • "Guide" figures as a resource for decision-making and life transitions
  • Symbol amplification and dreamwork: using hypnosis to deepen your relationship with dreams and recurring imagery
  • How to build a sustainable, ongoing self-hypnosis practice
  • Ethical considerations, contraindications, and scope-of-practice awareness for applying this work personally or professionally

Who This Course Is For:

Class Descriptions

Class 1 - Myths, History & the Basics of Hypnosis

In this class, we will trace the understanding of hypnosis  from ancient trance rituals to modern neuroscience and the Jungian framework. You'll explore what happens in the brain during hypnosis and why it opens a door to imagination and insight. You will explore your own hypnotic learning style through a guided experiential exercise.

Class 2 - Induction

This module will help you understand how the induction to self-hypnosis differs from other types of inductions. Then you will learn a simple, repeatable technique for guiding yourself into a hypnotic state. You will learn to put theory into practice with affirmations for relaxation, improved sleep, or self-esteem. You'll leave with your own personalized self-hypnosis plan.

Class 3 - Imagery Work I: Refuge

Build an internal refuge you can return to anytime.  A hypnotic "safe place" that calms your nervous system and restores a sense of steadiness. Explore how this technique supports recovery from burnout, overwhelm, and sleep difficulties. A guided practice helps you shape this resource in a way that's uniquely yours.

Class 4 - Imagery Work II: Guides

In this session, you will be guided to meet an inner resource figure- a symbolic guide who helps access deeper wisdom, inspired by Jung's own relationship with Philemon. Learn how a resource guide, whether an elder, an animal, or an aspect of Self, expands perspective, improves self-care, supports decision-making and life transitions. A guided hypnosis experience invites you to encounter and dialogue with your own guide.

Class 5 - Hypnosis for Dreamwork & Symbol Amplification

Take your dreamwork further by learning to re-enter dream imagery in hypnosis and deepen your relationship with recurring symbols and figures. Using Jungian amplification techniques, discover how hypnotic states help unlock the meaning held in your dreams. A guided practice lets you work directly with a personal symbol or dream image.

Class 6 - Integration, Application & Moving Forward

In this concluding session, you will bring it all together. The group will reflect on the imagery and insights that emerged throughout the course and learn how to sustain a self-hypnosis practice long-term. We'll cover additional applications, from easing everyday stress to working with imagery from film and story, plus techniques for deepening your practice over time. You'll leave with a personalized practice plan and a clear sense of where to go next.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe neuroscientific and depth‐psychological perspectives on hypnotic states, including commonly noted features such as changes in brain activity (e.g., theta‐dominant patterns), reduced critical monitoring, and increased access to imaginal processes.
  • Assess personal hypnotic responsiveness and learning style using an established framework (e.g., Kappasinian theory of suggestibility), and articulate implications for tailoring self‐hypnosis practice.
  • Demonstrate competency in a self‐hypnosis induction for stress reduction, emotional regulation, and initial access to symbolic or imaginal material.
  • Apply guided imagery methods including "safe place" imagery for nervous system regulation and "wise guide" figures for internal resource development to support psychological insight and affect regulation.
  • Recognize cultural, individual, and contextual factors that shape responsiveness to hypnotic and imaginal work, demonstrating appropriate adaptation of approaches and awareness of when consultation or specialized training is needed.
  • Integrate hypnotic approaches with basic dreamwork and symbol amplification techniques, informed by Jungian analytic perspectives, to deepen engagement with unconscious material.
  • Describe the scope and applications of hypnotherapy within clinical and personal contexts, recognizing how foundational self-hypnosis practice relates to advanced therapeutic applications that require specialized training.
  • Explore and apply deepening techniques (including progressive relaxation, environmental cues, and kinesthetic exercises) that support an effective and sustainable self-hypnosis practice.
  • Evaluate appropriate scope of practice, contraindications, and ethical considerations when using hypnosis and imagery‐based approaches for personal work and when adapting these methods for clients.
Prerequisite / Scope Statement
No prior hypnosis training is required for personal educational participation. Mental health professionals who adapt any practice for clients are responsible for working within their licenses, competence, informed-consent procedures, and applicable laws and ethical standards. Participation does not qualify a learner as a hypnotherapist.
